My911 Burns up the Competition on the Blackberry Torch
The new app, My911, works seamlessly on the Blackberry Torch, perhaps giving it a "one-up" on the iPhone.
PROVO, UT, August 26, 2010 /Telecommunications PR News/ -- My911 utilizes both the accelerometer and GPS technologies in order to automatically notify an ambulance in case of an accident. For the Blackberry Torch, this app runs in the background, insuring the safety of the owner. The iPhone is not yet able to run apps in the background, giving the Torch the upper-hand, for now. The app also allows parents to track their kids' location and speed, helping to protect and even spy on them.
Why is having the app running in the foreground a bad idea? It's just not convenient. You don't know when you will be in an accident, so you wouldn't know when to turn the app on. That's why the Torch takes My911 to a higher level. In addition to calling 911, My911 is able to notify up to 5 other people of an accident or fall. The GPS coordinates are sent to each of these recipients, as well as the police if desired. To fit the needs of more users, the app's sensitivity can be adjusted so that the slightest fall will set it off, or strictly only a car accident will set it off. Since you don't always want to call the police if you dropped your phone, or got in a minor accident, the user can make the app wait up to 60 seconds before making the call. If you want to cancel the call, just press a button within this 60 seconds. The app was basically built to run in the background, you set up the app the way you want it, then you run it and forget about it. Fortunately, someday it could save your life.
Often it can be difficult to call 911 after a severe accident. Sometimes, people become get badly hurt or become unsconcious, rendering them unable to perform such a simple task on their own. This is why an automatic 911 call can be helpful. Let us not forget though, that automatic crash response is not a new idea, but putting it on a phone ensures that no matter what car is being driven, a friend's or your own, you will always be able to take advantage of this service. This is potentially the most useful aspect of the app because it could save lives.
The app can also allow certain users to track the location and speed of certain others who have the app. For example, a parent can set the phone so that when their teenager's phone reaches a certain speed, it automatically notifies the parent and gives the speed and location of their teen. Or, possibly even more appealing, a parent can set up a virtual fence, so that if their teenager goes outside the allowed area, the parent is notified and given the location. These and other features would be appealing to most concerned parents; they would have such a greater awareness for their children and could find out if/when they are lying a little easier.
